Walking down Adderley street, I noticed something really weird. Road workers are busy with excavations preparing for the new bus lane. This was not the weird part. Underneath the tarmac, I got a glimpse of another era. A road constructed of wood. What appeared to be cobblestone was actually wooden blocks. I can almost see the road a 100 years ago, made of wood, with horses and cars moving across it.

On Friday morning I phoned into Cape Talk and won a set of ticket to to game between Western Province and the Blue Bulls at Newlands. I took my 7 year old daughter Marche with me to see her first rugby match at Newland. She was super exited and wore her mother's Province jersey, which was a little big for her. We had a great dayand luckily because province won.

Thank you Cape Talk for making this day possible.

The Taj Mahal Hotel is situated at the top of Adderley street in Cape Town, directly opposite the Slave Museum. We received a complimentary weekend in the hotel for two after we did a photo shoot in the hotel in March, and decided to use it on the weekend of my wife's birthday.

WOW

I am not the kind of person who uses words like wow and awesome, but wow, what an awesome weekend. If you, like me, have never stayed in a 5 star hotel, it is one of the things to ad to your Bucket List.

On Friday we dined in the Bombay Brassiere and it was unbelievable. we walked up to Loop Street and partied until the sun came up. I have not been to Loop street night clubs in years and it was a real eye opener. Gone are the days of feeling unsafe in the streets of Cape Town at night. I was shocked to find traffic police on duty directing taxis at 03h00 in the morning.

Saturday was spent lying in bed until 12h00. You cannot really appreciate the value of sleeping till 12 if you do not have children. We walked down st.Georges lane and visited Green Market square before we popped into the museum and had lunch in the Company Gardens.

Dinner was in the Mint Restaurant in the Hotel and I had the best steak that I have ever had in my live ever.

We had a great weekend and we would like to thank the staff of the Taj for their great service.

I popped in for the game between Durb-Bell, a combined club side of Durbanville and Bellville, and Villagers in Durbanville this weekend. the game was tough, and I forgot how hard club rugby really is. Durb-Bell walked away with a good victory of 41-22 in the end.

I got a new camera this week. After my last post about my camera theft I upset a few people, so if I did I apologise.

I went to the Vanfokkingtasties show at the Van der stel sports grounds in Stellenbosch on Friday. I have not been to a concert in Stellenbosch in years and the atmosphere in the small sports hall was electric. It was hot and damp in inside. My lens immediately fogged up as I entered due to the contrast in atmospheric conditions outside. I had to hold my camera against my body to heat it up to reduce the fogging.

What a fogging show. I saw Fokofpolisiekar in 2008 when they played at the Cobra Rally. This was something different. The guys looked re-energised and hungry again. The close proximity of the crowd fired them up even more. Wynand up to his old antics, and Francios was on Fire.

Heuwels Fantasties worked the crowd into a frenzy with "Pille vir Kerfees" and A King got the students singing along to their favourite tracks.

Van Coke Cartel was amazing. The talent of Mr Van Coke really seems to have no bounds.

I am goingthrough some of my old files on my hard drive and decided to upload some older photos while I am without a proper camera. The Moto shots was taken at a quad expo at the Brackenfell high school in 2008.

Every time I think I have problems or like is not fair, I look at these photos and realise how lucky I actually am. This lady is well known in Cape Town. She lost both her legs in a train accident, but she still manages a smile.

Yesterday was Big Wednesday. Huge Atlantic swell started pounding the coastline. If it was not for the international surfing contest in J Bay this week, the ocean would have been filled with surfers. to put this fist image into perspective, the spray of this wave reaches as high as 10 meters into the air. I love a rainy day. everything comes to live. A tarmac road turns into a mirror. Everything and everybody has a purpose. Nobody lounges around. Everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere, to stay dry and to avoid the rain. If I had more time and a waterproof camera I would spend all day taking photos in the rain.

I will start naming ma photos from today in order to add some atmosphere to my images.

11 July 2010 Prime Circle at the Fanfest

Prime Circle performed at the Fanfest in Cape Town to a capacity crowd. This was one of the last big acts to perform in the mother city for the world cup. They absolutely rocked the crowd. They managed to trip the power for the fanfest for the first time since the world cup started, and that includes those rainy days when Portugal played. The crowd was not phased by the power outage and sang along till the song finished.

Now the World Cup is over. Finish en kla. Dont you somehow feel empty? What now? I think as South African and capetonians we can be very proud of what we acheived in this world cup. This is not the end of a great sporting event, but the begining of anew chapter in the history our nation.

The local rock band 12th Avenue rocked the crowd at the Fanfest in the CBD on Tuesday. I have not heard them perform live before and I was very pleasantly surprised. The lead singer has an great voice that really carries. His voice reminds a lot of Jack black.

They are back. The Orange Army invaded the Mother city and the local sided with the invaders and donned their orange Jerseys and joined in the party. I don't think the dutch has this support anywhere else in the world except in Holland. What a great bunch of people. You guys rock.

The Niknaks man also joined in the party.

The Rock-a Billy band Them Tornados performed at the MTM Fanzone in the waterfront before the much anticipated Brazil vs Chile football game. They had the crown tapping along to their rock-a-Billy bass riffs and old school rock & roll tracks. The crazy Scotsman on the drums plays in a kilt while standing up. I don't know of another drummer in a rock band in South Africa that stand while drumming. He might be afraid of something hanging out if he sits down? They are performing again this weekend at "The Handle Bars" pub in Brackenfell.

The Dutch. What can you say about them? I dont think there is a harder partying nation that them in the world. These fans arrived at the fanpark by train at 13hoo, watched football and drank beer in the sun till 18hoo, walked 3 kilometers to the stadium while drinking and partying along the way, Watched their team qualify for the next round by beating Cameroon, walked 3 kilometers back to the city centre and and partied until the sun came up. R E S P E C T . They even had the courtesy of dying the fountain in the city orange. But the again, the dutch do have a history of scoring in cape town, dont they.

I was fortunate to photography the band "thought Police" playing live on the fanwalk from the balcony of an art exibition. It was a cold,wet and windy day in Cape Town on the day Portugal played in the Cape Town Stadium. Only a few die hard Soccer fans attended the game at the Fanfest in the CBD. They were treated to a spectacular display of football skill as Portugal scored 7 goals.

On Friday the 21st of April I photographer the gala dinner of an Indian insurance banking company at Moya at the Spier wine estate in Stellenbosch. Belly dancers entertained the crowd with their act, and I captured these amazing shots. Moya was an amazing venue creating a beautifully atmosphere, too bad they feel the have to rip off their customers with the prices at the bar. R45 for 2 beers is a ridiculous.

On Saturday I attended the 14th Anual Poker Run hosted by the Easy Rider Motorcycle Club In Bellville. Bikes, Babes, Strippers and Rock Bands. If you have not attended something like this before, this is definitely something to put on your to do list. The Rock-a-billy band Them Tornados performed while strippers entertained the eager crowd.

What a busy week. I have been photographing events for Gallo images for the past 2 weeks. Late nights every night and very little sleep. I am sure it will be rewarding in the end, but I have to put in the ours now. I photographed the CD launch of romantic Afrikaans rapper Jack Parow at the Barnyard Theatre in Bellville. What a show. Performing live with Francios van Coke, JR from Show Dem and other artists that collaborated with him on his new CD, they blew the crowd away. I hope you enjoy.

I caught a glimpse of whale about 100 meter off the coast a sea point.

I could not resist some close up shot of the moon. The moon appeared larger than normal this morning which enable me to get these great close up handheld shots.

At approximately 07h00 on the morning of the 27th one of the petrol attendants at the garage next to Tafelberg furnishes noticed smoke coming from the building. The son of the owner of the garage phoned the Fire Department, but they only arrived 40 minutes later. By that time the building was engulfed in flames. The Fire department battled the fire for another 40 minutes to no avail. The entire building with all its stock was gutted.

JaCK pAROW at The Purple Turtle. One word. Befok. The atmosphere was great in the packed club, the crowd was young and energetic, and the performance was excellent. Hats of to Jack for performing, even though he had a serious case of sinusitis. The future of afrikaans looks very bright with genuine performers like Jack in the stable.

Last night I decided it's time to try some sports photography. I Visited the Durbanville Rugby Club to captured the game between Durbanville and Maties. Rain interrupted the game intermittently and I got a few good shots. Durbanville was in the lead at half time, but heavy rain in the second half favoured the Maties in the second half and they eventually beat Durbanville. As you can see I am a photographer and not a sports journalist.

Market day at the Grand Parade. At 06h00 on a Wednesday morning the Grand Parade is a hive of activity. Traders are unloading truck full of goods to sell and setting up stalls.

A lot of work goes into setting up these stalls and unpacking stock. I can only imagine at what time in the morning these traders must start preparing for the day.

A huge stage is being erected on the Parade, presumable for a concert.

Docked in the harbour is the yacht of one of the richest men in the world. Never before have I seen anything like this. Redonkulously huge. I tried but could not capture the size of this enormous vessel with one shot. I stitched 8 images together to give you a warped sense of the size of this monster. There is a half size basketball court on the ship.

The cruise liner Seven Seas Voyager is dock next to the yacht.

While the richest men in he world have breakfast on their luxury ship, the discarded street children awake to a chilly Cape Town where they spent the night sleeping on cardboard boxes on a pavement in the rain.

I will be off to the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees tommorow morning, so technically the posts for the next week will not be for cape town, but Cape Town Area. Oudshoorn is a mere 4 hours drive from Cape town (2 and a half for Ronald in his new Hyundia) and the change in climate and vegetation is remarkable different. I will be keeping you posted daily. I'm sorry. my plans for the day was simple. Go to the traffic department, pay my license and renew my drivers licence, take some pix and post it on the blog. Surprise. Finally - Back in the Game. My daughter is home and healthy.

Another great day in town. On a beautiful day like this it is easy to forget the struggles that homeless people have to deal with every day. Winter is coming and the life will get really tough for these people. It just made me realise once again how important family and a support structure is in life. It is so easy to lose everything if you have no one to help you.
